Alaska became the 49th state in the
United State in January of 1959. Consisting of over 656,000 square
miles, the state is the largest although it has a very small population
of just over 600,000 people. Part of the state is actually located
within the Arctic Circle and has an island that is less than 40
miles from Russia. The United States purchases Alaska from Russia
for $7.2 million which is less than two cents an acre. There are
some Americans who can trace some of their ancestry to Alaska and
we have tried to include some useful sites and searchable databases
to help with your genealogy research.
