Philadelphia Church
Records 1709-60
Established in 1695 as the first Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,
Christ Church was one of the most important churches in the city
before the Revolutionary War. This database is a collection of
baptism and burial records from the church between 1709 and 1760.
Noted researcher Charles R. Hildeburn compiled this collection in
the nineteenth century. It provides information regarding over
20,000 individuals. Birth records provide the child's name, parents'
names, baptism date, and birth date or approximate age. Burial
records provide the decedent's name, date of burial, and surviving
spouse (or parent in the case of a deceased child). To those seeking
early Philadelphia ancestors, this can be a rich source of helpful
information.
Philadelphia Indentures, 1771-73
Perhaps the largest metropolitan area immediately preceding the
Revolutionary War, Philadelphia was also home to thousands of
indentured individuals. This collection of indenture records was
compiled by the city mayor's office between 1771 and 1773. It
contains information regarding individuals bound over as
apprentices, servants, etc. Information provided includes, name,
date of indenture, port of immigration, occupation, term of
indenture and other helpful notes. It also reveals the person
sponsoring the indenture. For genealogy researchers of Philadelphian
ancestors, this can be an extremely valuable collection, especially
if those ancestors were immigrants bound over in the service of an
established city resident.
Philadelphia
County Wills, 1682-1819
Philadelphia has always been a major port of entry for immigrants to
the U.S. It was established as a city and county during the colonial
era. Early in its history, laws required that estates be probated
before the court. This database includes abstracts from probated
wills for the years 1682-1819. Each record provides the names of all
individuals named in a will, their relationship to the deceased and
the date the will was proved in court. Researchers may obtain copies
of the original wills at the city hall in Philadelphia. This
database will help tie together individuals who lived in the
Philadelphia area from its earliest beginnings.
