There were just
over 4,000 inhabitants on December 29, 1863, when John N. Goodwin,
the first governor of the Territory of Arizona, issued a proclamation
to organize the government of the Territory. The first step taken
was to conduct a census of the of the territory's inhabitants. These
census returns are listed by town and include, when provided, name,
age, sex, marital status, place of birth, length of residence, whether
native or foreign born, naturalization date if applicable, the location
where the family resides, and occupations.
